Catnap – Tha Dub Wars 1997

The Dub Wars 1New Dubwars Back Final copy

I made this mix back in the summer of 1997.  I had my turntables out on my parents’ porch and I was getting irie late into the long nights, mixing dub and playing with my first FX box.  It was a wicked little steel box with just two knobs, effect and dry/wet.  All dub is timeless, or exists in a place outside of time, but the “old skool vs new skool” thing is because the tracks alternate between classic 70’s and 80’s jamaican dub to 90’s UK electronic dub.

This dub selection includes King Tubby, Michael Rose, Barrington Levy, Scientist, Michael Rose, Renegade Soundwave, and of course some Bob Marley and the Wailers.  Dig the dub and here and there, listen for me having some fun with my new toy.  Tracklist after the jump.

Lazy – Reggae from My Soul

soul_food

About two years ago I downloaded this set from Blentwell.com, by a DJ called “Lazy.” I’ve meant to upload it and make a post for a long time, since it’s one of the best reggae mixes I have ever heard.  I just noticed it’s no longer available from any blogs or share services, so I wanted to add it here.  It’s a dubbed-out blend of reggae covers of soul, blues, and funk classics.  Perfect for chilling out when you’re feeling the blues or you’re looking for some low-key seduction music.  Track list after the jump…

Jay-Z & Wu-Tang Dub Reggae Macro-Mashups!

mcrodub

Chris Macro has cranked out an amazing double-hitter of dub mashups featuring the Wu-Tang Clan and Jay-Z.  He collides the Wu headlong into King Tubby’s best, producing some truly memorable renditions of  “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya.”  Hearing ODB over classic dub is an irie pleasure.   And his combination of the Wailers with Jay-Z produces memorable moments when “Duppy Conqueror” meets “The Blueprint.”  Check out the streams below and then grab the full archive of both albums for your next lime.

Hawstyle – Dubrinse massive dubstep mix

hawstyle

DJ Hawstyle (Chris Haws) is one of those “best kept secrets” in the Midwestern drum n’ bass and dubstep scene.  His sets were always some of my favorites at raves back in the day (he’s been spinning since 1997!), and he is still killin’ it on the turntables.  Recently he posted this new dubstep mix to my other website, Ravetrash, and I had to get it up on the blog.  There aren’t many dubstep mixes that get lots of replays from me, but this is one of them.  A perfect blend of dub styles, hiphop / crunkstep, and surgically-precise mixing.  Grab it now and enjoy!  If you’re a drum n’ bass fan, I also recommend you check out his other mixes at Nofucks.com.
