DJ Kofi – Taking You Back (old school R’n’b mix)

I have been sitting on this mix for a long time. Encoded from the original cassette I bought in London circa 1998, here is DJ Kofi’s “Taking You Back” mix. It’s a flawless 80 minute set of classic funk, soul, and disco breaks, scratched, juggled, and mixed by the DMC champion turntablist.

I’ve searched all over the ‘net and never seen this mix available anywhere, so enjoy the exclusive! No track list is available, but I promise you that this will become one of your favorite old school mixes ever!

David Hollands – Midnight Train to Moscow

I’ve written about DJ David Hollands before, when I posted his classic “Pool Party” mix tape from 1996.    “Midnight Train to Moscow” followed in 2000, and is also one of my all-time favorite house mixes.  It’s a memorable blend of deep house, minimal techno, haunting vocals, and party-time cuts too.  Recently I visited David at his East Village abode in NYC and he gave me a copy of the mix tape art from the original.  Grab the front and the back artwork, along with the mix and enjoy.

Catnap – The Meow Mix Volume 3

Here’s the third volume of my “Meow Mix” series, celebrating the sound of house music, poetry, and soul. In keeping with the “Meow Mix” theme, this one weaves house and techno together, instrumentals with vocals, classic tracks and new surprises. Check out the poetic lyrics that flow like a beatnick free form jam in the addictive opening song by Holly Palmer & Dobie. Kenny Larkin’s meditation on a world without soul (“Without”) and Todd Gardener’s definition of house music (“Do You Know House?”) and Billie Holiday’s plaintive call to take “All Of Me” are also voices that will stay with you. I could write a paragraph on each of these tracks, but I’ll just let it speak for itself. Tracklist after the jump…

Catnap – NYC Nights Vol. 2

I have finally completed my latest DJ mix, a rockin’ stompin’ dance party blend!  It’s an intense mash-up of hiphop, indie rock, electro, house, and dubstep – 27 tracks in just 60 minutes.  It features music by Cypress Hill, the Beatles, Basement Jaxx, Sinden, Justice, the Prodigy, Pharoah Monche, Diplo, Chromeo, Cassius, Rick Ross, Masta Ace, and so much more.  I have titled it NYC Nights volume two, as it is a worthy successor for my 2004 mix of the same name, which I recorded when I first moved to the city.  That was then, this is now, and I think you’ll like how now sounds.

Jason “Lemon” Lyman – Quality Control

500px

Mmmmm, I haven’t heard a deep house mix THIS delicious in a long time.  Based out of Columbus, Ohio, Jason “Lemon” Lyman is one of the top house DJ’s in the midwest with over a decade and a half of experience on the decks.  This mix includes fantastic tracks by Josh Wink, Jimpster, Derrick Carter, Inland Knights, Jacob London, and concludes with one of my favorite house tracks of 2008, Real Time Hand Motion’s “Who Got It.” When you hear that upright bass kick in, you’ll know who’s got it!

Classic Italo-Disco and Chicago House Mix

Catnap - Space Disco Cover Image

Here is the latest Catnap mixtape, “Space Disco.” It’s an hour-long mix of electronic dance music from the late 1970’s and early-mid 1980’s, with two modern hits thrown in to round it out. I got the idea for this after listening to some Italo-disco over the winter and realizing how heavily it has influenced a lot of the popular sounds in dance music right now. The whole indie synth-pop craze, as well as the electrohouse and electroclash scenes owe their existence to these pioneering tracks. Featured artists include Giorgio Moroder, Cerrone, Telex, Fun Fun, Koto, Paul Hardcastle, and more.
