David Holmes, Greg Wilson, & ColdCut – 3 classic mixes

funkystuff2

Today I’ve got three of the best old school funk soul R&B hiphop disco DJ mixes you’ve ever heard.  I’ve got one recent BBC Essential mix, and one from the vaults, along with a “vintage edition” of the NinjaTune Solid Steel show.

Click here to check out and download the DJ mixes.

First up, David Holmes‘ classic Essential mix from 1997.  Widely considered one of the greatest Essential Mixes of all time, Holmes cut and scratched his way through an energetic mix of classic soul and funk nuggets.  Click here for the tracklist.

12 Years later, pioneering British DJ Greg Wilson dropped his Essential Mix which is every bit as amazing as the Holmes mix.  It’s slightly more melodic and disco, with some sweet electro funk tunes blended in.  Another must-have!  Click here for the tracklist.

Finally, a super sweet old school hiphop / breakbeats mix from Coldcut.  This is the classic British funky breaks sound; popularized in the late 80’s and early 90’s by groups like Coldcut, this kind of crate-digging, instrumental-heavy sound is the jump off for several later forms of breakbeat-oriented genres.  Get ready for old school rhymes and party time breaks!  Click here for the tracklist.

  1. i think the coldcut link is misdirected.

another great post though. thanks for these!

  2. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I’ve been looking for this Coldcut mix since I first heard it in on Kiss FM in what must have been the early 90’s. I managed to grab about half of it on a rubbish cassette recording at the time. I remember this was VERY influential on my music tastes at the time and put me onto Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Gangstarr … then the whole Acid Jazz thing … anyway CHEERS FOR HOSTING THIS MIX. You’ve made my musical decade (and we’re only a few weeks into). Fantastic site.
