DJ Kofi – Taking You Back (old school R’n’b mix)

I have been sitting on this mix for a long time. Encoded from the original cassette I bought in London circa 1998, here is DJ Kofi’s “Taking You Back” mix. It’s a flawless 80 minute set of classic funk, soul, and disco breaks, scratched, juggled, and mixed by the DMC champion turntablist.

I’ve searched all over the ‘net and never seen this mix available anywhere, so enjoy the exclusive! No track list is available, but I promise you that this will become one of your favorite old school mixes ever!

Breakestra: The Live Mixtape Vol. 2 (2000)

breakestra_livemixpa_101b

(From Dusty Groove) Funky madness! This one’s exactly what is says — a live mix, recorded by this hip funky combo, sort of a mixtape of classic funky tunes, all slammed together in one massive performance! Breakestra run through some of the biggest funky 45s of the 60s and 70s, jamming hard in one live to tape performance that takes us back to the classic days of the JBs grooving in the studio with James Brown. Plenty of choppy guitars, hot bubbly organ, sweet keyboard licks, and hard heavy horns throughout!

Miles Maeda – Sunshower

sunshower026

“Sunshower” by Miles Maeda has been a favorite of mine since I first bought the tape in 2000.  Miles just recently posted the mix on his blog, so I’m adding it here too.  In his words:

Here is the mid-tempo Sunshower mix with original artwork.  And yes, the title was indeed inspired by Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.  I believe I did this one in Colette’s basement in Chicago.  This was an exercise in keeping the pace at a casual jaunt, using rich textures, colorful instrumentation, and having a ‘Sunday afternoon in the park’ mood.  It’s one of those projects I felt turned out quite well from start to finish.  So enjoy a little Sunshower one sunny afternoon – bask yourself in its rays, soak it up, drink it in…Enjoy!

Bobby Corridor – Golden Age hiphop beats megamix

1443

I am reposting this mix by Bobby Corridor from Spannered, because as soon as I heard it, I knew it was one of the best hiphop instrumentals mixes ever.  Bobby layers over 600 classic, golden age beats two and three deep, letting them flow effortlessly into each other.  It’s both ADD and laid-back at the same time; for the first thirty minutes you’ll be naming each beat and rhyming along, but after a while you’ll reach a place of hiphop “zen” as the hits keep coming.  Grab this one now and rock it on repeat.  And if you like this style,  don’t forget about the EvLuvX mix I posted a while back; more good stuff in the same vein.

Gypsy – Jukebox Jaw!

gypsy

Gypsy is one half of the Archaics hiphop crew from California.  I heard his “Jukebox Jaw” mix via PearsonTowers recently and it is so good I have to add it to my collection!  While this mix is only about 40 minutes long, it is absolutely perfect.  Gypsy blends classic hiphop tracks and beats with the original breaks they sampled, creating a gorgeous flow from one track to another.  Some excellent freestyles by Gypsy and Archaics (i think) as well.  And while I’m kind of jaded these days about hiphop mixes, this one is the real deal.  Soulful, flawless, and timeless!  In his own words:

“jukebox jaw is the style i’ve been spinning for a few years now, blending originals with classics, splicing them with original beats by dj dutch and myself, and actually spittin while spinnin.”

Megasoid Remix Runners & Tank Thong mixtapes

megasoidheader

I just got hip to Megasoid today via these two fantastic mixtapes. Their bio provides a good intro: “Comprised of Robert ‘Speakerbruiser Rob’ Squire and Hadji Bakara, this Montreal based duo has been smashing the local population with their brand of rap-influenced big-synth remix music.”  Megasoid warps hiphop in a similar vein as their fellow Montreallers the South Rakkas Crew’s “electro dancehall.”

In the blog world of endless remixes of the same tracks, Megasoid injects fresh flavor, buzzing basslines, and a great sense of melody often missing from this style.  An absolutely essential addition to the canon of this rapidly evolving and exciting side of electronic music and hiphop.  Get up on it – your bassbins and your booty will thank you.

Andy C – Pure Rollers

andyc-purerollers2

Wow, I went to a lot of trouble to get my hands on this mix!  I tried to find it online, but the best I could find was an unmixed compilation of the tracks from this mix.  So I located a copy of the original mixed CD on Amazon and ordered it.  Why?  This is the first ever drum n’ bass mix I ever heard, back in 1996.  Andy C was then, and still is, one of the great legends of this style and this mix is chock full of Suburban Base hits from the original era of “jump up.”

Expect some crazy mashed amen breaks and lots of hiphop samples from Wu Tang and Dr. Dre.  Back in 1996, this mix blew my mind with a sound I’d never heard before – the spartan landscapes and rolling basslines are the soundtrack to disaffected urban landscapes and are like a hiphop-inflected version of the sparse Sheffield and Detroit techno of the late 80’s / early 90’s.  Roll on!  Track list after the jump…
