SPD Shoe 2010 buyer’s guide Pt. 1 – Casual Shoes

spd_casual

Following up on my last post, I recognize that not everyone wants to make their own SPD-compatible shoes.  So what are your “off the shelf ” options?  Well, I’ve done a lot of research and here is the first installment of my two-part “2010 buyer’s guide” based on the coolest shoes I have seen that are currently for sale.  My criteria here is to list shoes that would look and feel good at a casual office or social occasion, the kind of shoes you can wear all day, anywhere, without looking like a total bike dork.  This first list is of leather low-profile shoes that have a European style.  Part Two of the buyer’s guide will focus on sneakers that are SPD-compatible.

Check out the rest of the 2010 buyer’s guide after the jump:

Here’s my number one pick: The Vittoria 1976 shoe

These are at the top of my “want” list, although at $200 they are not an impulse buy. BikeSnob reviewed them recently, and they generally get the winning vote from most of the NYC riders I know. The only down-side is that they are vented throughout (since they are intended for indoor track) and so are not a good choice for cold or rainy weather. They are available in four colors, and in leather, suede, crocodile, and kangaroo hide. PIMP!

2nd Place: Dromarti Sportivo – $215

Bontrager Street Shoes – $99

Exustar ESRT707 Touring Shoes – $100

Exustar SP705 Stelvio Shoes – $105

Shimano SH MT22 – $60-70

  1. I like this article! I think those Vittoria shoes are way cool, but the sure look funny in white!

  2. great post! i have the bontrager street’s, and they work well with what i use them for. stiff enough for cycling (my commute is 12-15 miles round-trip), but comfortable enough to walk in. aesthetically, however, they’re not exactly my cup of tea. — i’ve been looking at the 1976’s, and will probably get some once the weather turns around. i like how the sportivo’s look as well, except the white cleats seem to contrast really poorly.
