Carey Ott – “Moving Parts” & “Ain’t No Upside”

careysmoneeyecroppedCarey Ott is one of my recent favorite singer / songwriters.  His new album, “Human Heart” is coming soon, and I can’t think of a better introduction to Carey’s music than these two singles: “Moving Parts” and “Ain’t No Upside.”  His songs are mellow, lyrical, ironic, humorous, and incredibly addictive.  You’ll be humming these tunes all day after just one listen.

“Ain’t No Upside” reminds me of a modern-day Bobby McFerrin ditty – a deft response to “Don’t Worry Be Happy” for a time period in our history that is anything but carefree.  There’s a video coming soon for this amazing song, but in the meantime check out some of the live performances on YouTube.

“Moving Parts” is by Murdo, a band that Carey Ott is part of.  Carey’s delivery in this song sounds a bit like the blues, delivered with a soft country twang accentuated with a gorgeous guitar line, as if you were hanging out with him on a sunny porch or a smoky country bar.  And yet, there’s an undercurrent of stinging truth in the lyrics, which pull back the curtains of mass media, religion, and politics to reveal the sordid “moving parts” behind the scenes.

1985 Cinelli Supercorsa

This is a 1985 Cinelli Supercorsa 58cm bicycle I restored and sold.  I bought it from the original owner who had it in dry storage for many years.  Columbus SP or SL tubing, Campagnolo Chorus group.  I replaced the headset and seatpost with fresh-out-of-the-box NOS parts, since the original owner had non-Campy parts on it.

Serial number indicates it was the 61st frame of its type built in 1985. Vintage yellow Selle Italia Flite saddle. Rims are Campy Omega Strada XL hardox clinchers with Continental Duraskin tires. Stem and bars are Cinelli, and the bars are Giro D’Italia model. Original brake hoods too!

The bike does have some scratches in the paint and a small dent in the top tube, but is in great mechanical condition with no rust. Check out the pictures in the gallery below. I sold it to a guy down in New Orleans, Louisiana, so hopefully he’s enjoying it.

Andy C – Pure Rollers

andyc-purerollers2

Wow, I went to a lot of trouble to get my hands on this mix!  I tried to find it online, but the best I could find was an unmixed compilation of the tracks from this mix.  So I located a copy of the original mixed CD on Amazon and ordered it.  Why?  This is the first ever drum n’ bass mix I ever heard, back in 1996.  Andy C was then, and still is, one of the great legends of this style and this mix is chock full of Suburban Base hits from the original era of “jump up.”

Expect some crazy mashed amen breaks and lots of hiphop samples from Wu Tang and Dr. Dre.  Back in 1996, this mix blew my mind with a sound I’d never heard before – the spartan landscapes and rolling basslines are the soundtrack to disaffected urban landscapes and are like a hiphop-inflected version of the sparse Sheffield and Detroit techno of the late 80’s / early 90’s.  Roll on!  Track list after the jump…

Pete Rock – PeteStrumentals album

petestrumentalspic

Here’s a rare, UK-only release for all you fans of good jazzy hiphop.  Pete Rock, the producer behind the classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” and many other classics, released this underground gem in 2001.  It’s a mix of never-before-heard instrumentals and a couple of hiphop tracks as well.  I’ve been listening to it over and over again, and it embodies all the aspects of my favorite kind of hiphop.  If you’re a fan of J Dilla, DJ Premier, Evil D, etc. then you better grab this right now.

DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist – Brainfreeze

brainfreeze

Brainfreeze was a 1999 live mix album by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist (formerly a member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli). The two tracks of the album are uninterrupted recordings from a live performance where they sampled hit funk, soul, rock and jazz singles from 45 rpm vinyl records. This type of recording was pioneered by the duo Double Dee and Steinski through their “Lessons” (the difference being that the “Lessons” cuts were meticulously edited together from snippets of audio tape, rather than performed live using turntables).  Brainfreeze was recorded by DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist as a practice session for a show in February 1999 at the Future Primitive Soundsession (San Francisco) mixing funk and soul 45’s.

Initially 1000 copies were made and sold at the shows, and a further 1000 copies were made and distributed to local records stores in California and sold out very quickly. A cease-and-desist letter from 7-11 Convenience stores (the whole artwork and styling was based on their logos and uniforms) meant that they stopped and moved on.  This set was reenacted at the Mayan night club in Los Angeles on May 25, 2006, as part of a benefit concert for DJ Shadow’s art director, Keith Tamashiro, in order to offset costs related to a brain aneurysm he suffered early in 2006.  The 45s used in the Brainfreeze mix are highly sought after by vinyl collectors, and the term “Brainfreeze” in online auctions often results in increased auction prices for these records.

What else can be said – this is a true crate-digger classic. I combined parts 1 & 2 into a continuous 52-minute track.  Get it now!

Hawstyle – Dubrinse massive dubstep mix

hawstyle

DJ Hawstyle (Chris Haws) is one of those “best kept secrets” in the Midwestern drum n’ bass and dubstep scene.  His sets were always some of my favorites at raves back in the day (he’s been spinning since 1997!), and he is still killin’ it on the turntables.  Recently he posted this new dubstep mix to my other website, Ravetrash, and I had to get it up on the blog.  There aren’t many dubstep mixes that get lots of replays from me, but this is one of them.  A perfect blend of dub styles, hiphop / crunkstep, and surgically-precise mixing.  Grab it now and enjoy!  If you’re a drum n’ bass fan, I also recommend you check out his other mixes at Nofucks.com.

Catnap – NYC Nights Vol. 2

I have finally completed my latest DJ mix, a rockin’ stompin’ dance party blend!  It’s an intense mash-up of hiphop, indie rock, electro, house, and dubstep – 27 tracks in just 60 minutes.  It features music by Cypress Hill, the Beatles, Basement Jaxx, Sinden, Justice, the Prodigy, Pharoah Monche, Diplo, Chromeo, Cassius, Rick Ross, Masta Ace, and so much more.  I have titled it NYC Nights volume two, as it is a worthy successor for my 2004 mix of the same name, which I recorded when I first moved to the city.  That was then, this is now, and I think you’ll like how now sounds.
