Vinroc & Shortcut – So Much Soul Vol. 1

DJ’s Vinroc and Shortkut from the incredible Beat Junkies crew mixed this set back in 2003, the first in a seven-volume series of mixes of jazzy r & b and classic hiphop cuts, blended and remixed with  precision.  This is one of those low-key but deeply soulful joints that’s perfect for a late night seduction or rolling a spliff and letting your mind drift to the days of wayback.   It’s got both mood and depth, ensuring many replays on your beatbox.  The ladies have been both been giving me a lot of love recently, and hurtin’ my heart at the same time, and this mix is perfect soundtrack for this kind of “new york moment.”

EvLuv X & Headnodic – classic hiphop instrumentals mix

evluv

DJ / producers Headnodic (of the Crown City Rockers / Mighty Underdogs) and EvLuv X have put together an hour-long mix of classic hiphop instrumentals that is the best I’ve heard in a very long time.  Reminiscent of Mark Farina’s early Mushroom Jazz mixes, it’s a head-nodding blend of jazzy old-school beats.  Truly essential – the kind of mix you can put on and let repeat for hours.

New Catnap mix – “November Chill”

November Chill cover

I’ve just finished up my Fall mix for 2008, and it’s an eclectic blend of chillout classics from the mid-90’s to early 2000’s.  It opens up with a tune by Yoko Kanno, a Japanese composer known for her work on many famous anime including Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell.  Titled “Pulse,” it is the theme from 1994’s Macross Plus, and I’ve wanted to include it in a mix for a long time.  Other notables include Cigani Rusza & Angelo’s gypsy-inflected tune “Demovast,” John Medeski’s rollicking “Swamp Road,” and Nightmares on Wax’s bouncey ode to ‘back in the day’ “70’s & 80’s.”
