Spinbad’s Rock The Casbah – best 80’s mix EVER.

80sfrt

I already featured one of Spinbad’s classic hiphop mixes in an earlier post, but you gotta check out this mix.  It’s easily the best 80’s mix I have ever heard – Spinbad applies his virtuoso turntablist talents to mixing, mashing, scratching, and rocking an awesome lineup of classic 80’s pop and rock n’ roll.  Interspersed with hilarious snippets from 80’s movies, this mix will rock your next party and leave you laughing and rocking out at the same time.  Originally recorded in 1995, this is the remastered CD-quality version that came out later.  It doesn’t have as many tracks as the original tape, but sounds a lot better than the tape rips I’ve heard online.

Jantsen – Gutter Music glitch-hop / crunkstep mix

m_ddf1182abb33e17740fb29617baa8ad5Jantsen’s “Gutter Music” mix dates back to 2007, but I just recently discovered it and was immediately blown away by the perfect mix quality, the speaker-crushing bass, and truly creative remixing.  It’s exciting to hear a mix that is nearly all original remixes, representing a creative work that transcends what we think of as a “DJ mix” much in the same way that Dangermouse’s “Gray Album” did.  Grab this now and make sure you play it on a system that has a lot of BASS!

David Hollands – Pool Party

poolparty_cover

Wowwww… I just found this mix via David Hollands’ site and am nearly paralyzed with nostalgia.  This is the very first dj mixtape I ever heard, which I bought at the first rave I ever went to.  David Hollands is a world-traveled and renowned DJ, and is currently the host of the Fuerza Bruta “DJ Connection” events, the successor to the famous De La Guarda shows.  Pool Party is one of his earlier mixes, a blend of deep house and techno that blew my mind 13 years ago, and forever shaped my tastes in both electronic music and DJ mixes.

Catnap – The Meow Mix Volume 3

Here’s the third volume of my “Meow Mix” series, celebrating the sound of house music, poetry, and soul. In keeping with the “Meow Mix” theme, this one weaves house and techno together, instrumentals with vocals, classic tracks and new surprises. Check out the poetic lyrics that flow like a beatnick free form jam in the addictive opening song by Holly Palmer & Dobie. Kenny Larkin’s meditation on a world without soul (“Without”) and Todd Gardener’s definition of house music (“Do You Know House?”) and Billie Holiday’s plaintive call to take “All Of Me” are also voices that will stay with you. I could write a paragraph on each of these tracks, but I’ll just let it speak for itself. Tracklist after the jump…

Carey Ott – “Moving Parts” & “Ain’t No Upside”

careysmoneeyecroppedCarey Ott is one of my recent favorite singer / songwriters.  His new album, “Human Heart” is coming soon, and I can’t think of a better introduction to Carey’s music than these two singles: “Moving Parts” and “Ain’t No Upside.”  His songs are mellow, lyrical, ironic, humorous, and incredibly addictive.  You’ll be humming these tunes all day after just one listen.

[audio:http://www.djcatnap.com/myoozick/CareyOtt-AintNoLivin.mp3]

“Ain’t No Upside” reminds me of a modern-day Bobby McFerrin ditty – a deft response to “Don’t Worry Be Happy” for a time period in our history that is anything but carefree.  There’s a video coming soon for this amazing song, but in the meantime check out some of the live performances on YouTube.

[audio:http://www.djcatnap.com/myoozick/Murdo-MovingParts.mp3]

“Moving Parts” is by Murdo, a band that Carey Ott is part of.  Carey’s delivery in this song sounds a bit like the blues, delivered with a soft country twang accentuated with a gorgeous guitar line, as if you were hanging out with him on a sunny porch or a smoky country bar.  And yet, there’s an undercurrent of stinging truth in the lyrics, which pull back the curtains of mass media, religion, and politics to reveal the sordid “moving parts” behind the scenes.

Andy C – Pure Rollers

andyc-purerollers2

Wow, I went to a lot of trouble to get my hands on this mix!  I tried to find it online, but the best I could find was an unmixed compilation of the tracks from this mix.  So I located a copy of the original mixed CD on Amazon and ordered it.  Why?  This is the first ever drum n’ bass mix I ever heard, back in 1996.  Andy C was then, and still is, one of the great legends of this style and this mix is chock full of Suburban Base hits from the original era of “jump up.”

Expect some crazy mashed amen breaks and lots of hiphop samples from Wu Tang and Dr. Dre.  Back in 1996, this mix blew my mind with a sound I’d never heard before – the spartan landscapes and rolling basslines are the soundtrack to disaffected urban landscapes and are like a hiphop-inflected version of the sparse Sheffield and Detroit techno of the late 80’s / early 90’s.  Roll on!  Track list after the jump…

Pete Rock – PeteStrumentals album

petestrumentalspic

Here’s a rare, UK-only release for all you fans of good jazzy hiphop.  Pete Rock, the producer behind the classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” and many other classics, released this underground gem in 2001.  It’s a mix of never-before-heard instrumentals and a couple of hiphop tracks as well.  I’ve been listening to it over and over again, and it embodies all the aspects of my favorite kind of hiphop.  If you’re a fan of J Dilla, DJ Premier, Evil D, etc. then you better grab this right now.
