Neighborhood Denim

nbhd

I recently discovered a small blog called “Jacky’s first Choices,” which has a couple of really good articles about the Japanese premium denim company Neighborhood.

The author tracks the history of Neighborhood’s releases going back to 2002 in a Natural History of Neighborhood Jeans, highlighting some of their most impressive drops. Neighborhood is known for their $400-$1,300 hand-distressed denim, the most high profile being a recent collabo with Supreme.

After buying his own pair of Neighborhood jeans, Jacky posted a very in depth Product Report: Neighborhood 06 Lightning Savage. This one is great, comparing minute details in the denim quality, as well as further explaining the allure of this brand.

Finally, Jacky’s article on Jean Cultivation: Creating an One-of-One pair of jeans is required reading for anyone into the raw denim / “shrink-to-fit” styles that are very popular now. Great reading over all! I hope he keeps it up.

Hiphop Reggae mix: Dogs Bollocks ft. the Roots Rockers

jah!

I discovered this great DJ mix recently on NewMixes.com. From Vienna, Germany’s “The Dog’s Bollocks” radio show on FM4 hosted by the Slack Hippy, this mix was done by guests the Roots Rockers, aka Doc Holiday and Uwe Kaa. It is a fairly unique and awesome blend of classic reggae riddims mashed-up with classic hiphop from the Pharcyde, Method Man, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Busta Rhymes, and more. About 2/3rds of the way through, they drop some siiiick reggae-jungle, too! This is one of those rare DJ mixes that I think is just PERFECT in every way; vibes, selection, rarities… wow. The Pharcyde and Method Man remixes are instant classics and undoubtably rare; I for one have never heard them before! If you love hiphop and reggae, download this right now.

Supra Skytop 14k

Skytop Gold 14k

So since my post on the original Supra Skytop Gold (Jay-Z wore them in Rihanna’s Umbrella Video) continues to be the number one traffic-driver to this site, I guess I’m obligated to cover its successor, the Supra Skytop 14k. Building on the massive success of the first round of Skytops, Chad Muska has released this new gold dream. It’s all-gold with tiny holes / perforations all over, and nice gold racing stripes along the sole side.  They help the shoe keep your feet comfy in case you decide to do athletic stuff like run a marathon or do a cameo in a music video.

These are really classy and about as close as you’re gonna get to the original gold Skytops. List price is $124, and while they are already getting rare (having dropped 2-3 months ago) if you do an Ebay search for them you’ll get about a dozen results as of today.

Got Ato?

Ato Matsumoto Sneakers

I love being ahead of the style curve, especially in Manhattan. When everyone sweats your gear, and nobody else has it? Love it. That’s the case with my newest sneaker acquisition – Ato’s. Ato Matsumoto is a japanese designer who was unknown in the US until this past summer when Kanye began wearing his signature cowhide sneakers. They look straight out of Back to The Future. Nuff said. So anyways, I figure I’ll get a few more weeks of smug hypebeastery out of these until I bump into a kid in Soho with a pair on and a pink all-over-print Dunny hoodie.

NEW Santogold Super Mystery Bonus Track

Santogold

You know Santogold, right? Yeah, you do. It’s about time she drop that album, right? Come on, Santi! To hold you over until then, I got my paws on some good stuff. I call it a “super mystery bonus” because I don’t know the real title. From a recent live performance, in Santogold’s words, “here’s a new one, currently a demo.”  ***Edit: The folks at Trash Menagerie are “pretty certain” the title is “Anne.”***

DJ Anonymous – Booty House

p_diddy_loves_big_booty1

I searched long and hard to get my hands on this classic mixtape! Wisconsin-based DJ Anonymous released it via Massive Magazine back in 1999, dropping all of the filthy, stomping, pimp-alicious house tracks that made DJ Funk, CZR, Cajmere, and others the Chicago legends we know them as today. B-More Bass, Detroit Ghettotech, and pretty much the whole dance mashup scene have their roots in this music.

*Edit 5.15.09 – One of my readers posted a better version in the comments section.  I have updated the link with this version – it’s EQ’d better for mo’ booty bumpin.  Enjoy, and thank you Ed.*  Download this tape now – one of my favorites for over A DECADE!
