Tokyoflash Shinshoku

shinshoku 1

The Tokyoflash Shinshoku is the first watch in months to catch my attention. The strap is a continuous stainless steel band that wraps around your wrist with a matrix of punched out holes. Beneath the surface are 29 super bright LED’s which illuminate to indicate the time. There are 4 models available: black band with multicolored, red, or green lights, and a translucent band version. Only available at Tokyoflash!

Nike Dunk High “Orange Earthquake” Crackle

crackle 1

I also copped these at the Reed Space sale this weekend. The Nike Dunk Hi Premium comes in a Varsity Orange/Newsprint-Myth Colorway. Classic shape made of anthracite/grey suede and orange ripstop material and a crackle sole. Upper nylon square print materials, toe box suede, back heel premium leather, too! Reminiscent of the “huf quake” dunks that dropped last year but with less hype and more style.

I just picked up this pair of dunks at Reed Space’s fall sale over the weekend. Released in late August, the Nike Dunk High “Orange Blaze” features a vibrant Orange Blaze/Bright Cactus on a contrasting Black upper with a semi-translucent smoked mid sole and a semi-translucent Red out sole.

Visvim Christo Desert

visvim christo

Normally, I don’t think of myself as a sandals type of guy. Even when I head down to Miami every year for the WMC, I’m rocking shelltoes or dunks on the beach. However, I’ve had my eyes on the Christo sandal by the Japanese label Visvim (they don’t have a website, but you can buy their stuff at yoox.com, grandism.com, and slamjam.com), which has attained a cult-like status there, as well as with stateside hypebeasts like myself. So when I got an excuse to buy a pair recently (an upcoming Hawaii vacation) I jumped on them. Inspired by the famous artist Christo, the Visvim Christo wraps your foot in a smooth one-piece leather forefoot wrapping, while the soles of your feet rest on the fully leather-laminated orthodic footbed. The ultralight EVA Pylon midsole gives the Christo’s a sneaker-like feel and function.

This particular version is called the “Desert.” I’ve seen a lot of other versions and collaborations, including the Island series, which use all synthetics for a more water-friendly design. Some collabos have included Clot, Neighborhood, Fil, and Undercover. You can find many of these on Ebay, but watch out because there’s a lot of fakes showing up these days. The Christo is lightweight yet chunky, protecting my feet enough to feel secure walking the NYC streets or even riding my bike in midtown traffic. Too bad Fall is here and the temperatures are dropping quickly… looks like I need to book more vacations!

My Favorite 90’s Hiphop Mix

Steez coverI’ve had this mix rocking almost nonstop for the last two months since I got my hands on it. Many of my favorite “golden-age” hiphop joints are on here, with the acapellas seamlessly blended over different classic beats. There’s even some out-take / never heard before freestyles over the tracks by the original artists themselves.

This was the background music at a recent panel about mixtapes I produced with Vh1 & the Mixtape Awards at New York University, and many seasoned DJ’s commented on how dope it was. I’m not gonna blabber on about this one, just download it now and you’ll see… Click here for the full track listing.

Kimono Jeans by Edo Damashii

Edo Damashii is a small Thailand-based designer that sells their creations on Ebay. They are part of a growing number of fashion designers who have chosen to use Ebay as their primary storefront, going for a direct-to-customer business instead of the traditional struggle to get their clothes featured in boutiques. I’ve been watching this growing demographic for a while, ever since I bought a hand-made hat on Ebay two years ago. Since then, I’ve purchased a number of different items of clothing from Ebay designers, and now I’d like to spotlight my favorites.

Edo Damashii’s primary creation are their “Kimono Jeans” which are handmade from distressed denim and Kimono-cloth that has a wide variety of Asian-themed prints. The jeans at the right are the actual pair I purchased from Edo Damashii. The cut of the jeans is very similar to the classic Levis’ 501 jean, and at first I thought they were actually made using vintage pairs of 501’s, but when they arrived, I noticed that the rivets were all marked “Edo Damashii” and were fairly new. Therefore, I think these jeans start life as 501 copies.

edo dama 2 The jeans have some pretty cool hand-made distressing. Three lightning-bolt-shaped holes in the front are sealed with black patches behind the holes and then stitched over with white threading. On the left leg, there is a cool silkscreen print of a dragon. Even the leather patch on the pack of the jeans is customized with Edo Damashii’s logo.

Overall, the wash of the denim leaves a bit to be desired, as it’s very regular, and I’ve never been a huge fan of the 501 cut in general as I find it a bit boxy and traditional. In some places there were loose threads, so I’d suggest Edo Damashii step up the quality a little bit. However, these jeans are unique (browse through their Ebay store and you’ll see every pair is unique!) and they only cost $29.00 plus shipping from Thailand which was actually quite reasonable. Shipping time to my NYC address was about three weeks. For the price and unique look, these jeans can’t be beat! They also have some very cool t-shirts, customized motorcycle jackets, and biker-style wallets.
