Skratch Bastid & The Gaff – Soul Sisters STAND UP!

Beyond being acclaimed Canadian DJs, Skratch Bastid and the Gaff share a love for ’60s- and ’70s-era soul music. Over the past couple of years, the pair spent two years in the lab concocting Soul Sisters, Stand Up! – a funky as hell 80-minute mix of sister funk n’ soul tunes. In Scratch Bastid’s own words:

Well, here it is. Soul Sisters, Stand Up! is our long awaited, brand new 80-minute mix filled with 100% Female Funk/Soul/R&B/Breaks. 2 DJs. 2 years in the making. Featuring the sounds of soulful ladies from the mid-60s & mid-70s – a snapshot of love, pain, happiness, oppression, strength, struggle and more from an era where records were the primary outlet for these voices. These messages are driven home by the beats and grooves from what is undeniably the funkiest decade in music history. From Freda, Aretha, Nina & Diana to Betty Everett, Lavette & Davis, we take you on a journey to a mindset, using tunes both classic and criminally overlooked to tell the story. Mixed together in classic mixtape fashion… you know, with mixing.

The selections are funky, sequenced and blended flawlessly, showcasing the voices of Marlena Shaw, Lyn Collins, Merry Clayton, Etta James, Aretha and many more. Some of the O.G. samples are looped live, recreating the classics on the fly in the context of the mix without losing momentum.  Stream the tape to preview if you must, but smart money says a download might be in order as this is likely to get repeat listens from any avid fan of quality music.

Colm K – Beats Rhymes and Features mix

… or it’s full title of “Beats, Rhymes & Features – The Extensive Adventures Of The Abstract Poetic Q Tip mixed by Colm K”.

Colm K, Irish DJ and producer extraordinaire has taken time out to lace us with this great little mix of Q-Tip’s solo work.

Some gems on here featuring Q on the mic and behind the boards.  You can’t beat an emcee that rhymes, produces and collects records.  It’s the epitome of hiphop and something you don’t see too much of these days but then again there’s not many emcees who can stand up to Q-Tip in terms of rhymes, production and overall legacy.  Old school and New school – the mix below speaks for itself.  (re-blogged from ChoiceCuts’ website, home of this mix)

Kenny Dope – Soul Trippin’

Anyone who reads this blog for the music posts will know I am big fan of Kenny Dope, especially the series of mixes he did through the first half of the last decade.  “Breakbeats,” “Hiphop Forever,” and “Roller Boogie 80’s” are all some of my most favorite mixes ever.  Now Kenny’s got himself a Soundcloud account, he’s been uploading some great stuff.  Soul Trippin’ is a perfect throwback mix, bubbling with all kind of rare funk and soul gems.

Catnap – Meow Mix 4

The latest edition of the Meow Mix takes you to the beach!  In keeping with the Meow Mix tradition, it features lots of uplifting, melodic tunes with some Latin spice and a couple classic anthems.  It kicks off with a rare live jam by BT & Danny Tenaglia called “Blue Skies,” a longtime favorite of mine.  Other highlights include funky workouts  by Herbie Hancock and War, Aly-Us’s unforgettable “Follow Me,” Pete Heller’s “Big Love” and a little Daft Punk.  Bob Sinclair, Basement Jaxx, and DJ Gregory are all in the mix, too.

***Update***  I added six more songs to this mix on December 26th, 2010.  See tracklist for update.

DJ Spinna – Happy Birthday Marvin Gaye

DJ Spinna offers this mix in celebration, which he says features

“some rare releases, B-sides, alternate versions, exclusive re-edits and remixes courtesy of myself and some legendary dj/producer friends.”

He goes on to say that:

“The whole world knows that I’m a huge Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson and Prince buff.  But the other beast of a soul artist that I love to death is Marvin Gaye, of course! His music deeply expresses the soul of a man.  The most bewildering thing about Marvin that I’ve come to understand more in my adult years is how he was able express his life experiences so artistically despite all his traumatic upheaval. I mean, his pops was a cross dressing preacher that practically despised his own son. I’ll never forget the day I found out his dad took him out, the day before his birthday! I couldn’t understand it and I was sad as hell. But life is wild that way. All that pain he endured led to greatness.”

DJ Spinna – Best of Sade

This one is a must-listen for lovers of… well, love!  Sade needs no introduction, and neither does DJ Spinna, although it’s a crime that I haven’t added one of his mixes to my blog until now.  This mix, put together by Spinna a few months ago to celebrate Sade’s long awaited return with her new album “Soldier of Love,” collects all of Sade’s greatest hits and blends them into a sublime stew of sultry vocals and sexy beats.  Some excellent remixes in here as well, from dub-master Mad Professor, Nellee Hooper of Soul II Soul, Pal Joey, and Spinna himself.

This Is Lamb

Lamb, a contemporary of Massive Attack in the mid-late 90’s UK triphop & drum n’ bass scene, produced several albums of haunting, edgy electronic songs, the best of which are collected in DJ Finny’s awesome “This Is Lamb” mix.   Although getting their start in Manchester, Lamb are more commonly associated with the Bristol-based trip hop sound that was popular during the nineties. Aside from trip hop, their musical style is a distinctive mixture of jazz, dub, breaks and drum and bass, with a strong vocal element and, in their later works especially, some acoustic influences.

At nearly three hours, this mix captures the best work of Lamb, mixed smoothly and unobtrusively.  In Finny’s words:

After a very long drive back from an airport, my cd changer came up with Lamb’s first self-titled albumn, and i thought to myself “has anyone done a mix of Lamb’s stuff?” well, i didnt actually look to see if anyone actually did or not, i went straight to planning 🙂 And here is the final Result.

This is a journey through all 4 of their albumns, this 3 hour mix starts with their very laid back ~70bpm tracks, and gradually builds to their trip hop and ambient DnB ~150bpm tracks, and if you haven’t heard of Lamb before, this music is perfect to shag a lass to.

I purposely put “Arranged” as opposed to “Mixed” because i made a physical effort not to overlap the tracks too much, yet make the transitions as smooth as possible, because i wanted everyone to hear the very best of this duo.
