Catnap – Anodyne 2 techno / electro mix

The sequel to my first “pretty techno” mix, Anodyne.  Drawing on a range of classic and contemporary techno and electro selections with a melodic, atmospheric feel, there are tracks from legends like The Orb, Fluke, Luke Slater, The Future Sound of London, and Orbital.   There’s also a healthy dose of dubbed-out minimal techno from the Kompakt label and some vocal-driven electro from Solvent, Safety Scissors, and Dapayk & Padberg.   With 24 tracks in just over 70 minutes, there’s a lot of layers, but I think it all comes together into a moving, uplifting experience.  Full tracklist after the jump…

Blue Sky Black Death – Aquatic Reverie

Young God and Kingston are collectively known as production duo Blue Sky Black Death, cutting melancholic hip-hop beats years before folks like Clams Casino went that route.  Already responsible for soundtracks to rappers like Nacho Picasso, Jean Grae, and Hell Razah, Aquatic Reverie is a blend of all things beautiful in their pursuit of instrumental happiness.  Read on for more, plus download & stream links…

Catnap – Anodyne

Anodyne is the latest Catnap mix, in the same vein as the Meow Mix series but drawing from the electro and techno side of things.  There’s some classic selections, like Rhythim Is Rhythim’s “Nude Photo” (1987) and A Guy Called Gerald‘s anthem “Voodoo Ray” (1988).  I finally worked Siriusmo‘s amazing track “Discosau” into a mix, as well as Dexter‘s sexy electro tune “D-Funked” and Boy Robot‘s poignant “My Heart’s Still Beating”.  Another favorite of mine in the mix is “Move Your Mind” by Kevin Yost, which reminds me a lot of “Halcyon+on” by Orbital.

Like its name sake, Anodyne starts out with some intense and glitchy selections before settling into a funky groove that later unfolds into lush, dreamlike techno soundscapes.  It will fix what ails you, or at least soothe the pain.

This Is Massive Attack

Clocking in at over four and a half hours, this epic mix collects Massive Attack’s vast collection of work into a flowing journey of elegiac, melancholy soul and deep, dubbed-out funk.  Spanning their career from 1991 to 2004’s “Danny the Dog OST” album, as well as a number of the essential Mad Professor remixes from “No Protection,” this is a definitive document on the seminal Bristol, UK group.

Arranged by DJ Finny, who did a perfect job of blending and arranging this mix in a way that always puts the music first, and also bridges the darker, more ambient interludes with classics like “Karmacoma” and “Teardrop.”  Listen and download below, and check out the gigantic track list after the jump.

Kinosport – Rytmikaravaani live set

Kinosport’s live DJ set at Helsinki’s Rytmikaravaani event is one of the most delicious deep house / minimal techno sets I’ve ever heard.  I’ve been playing it for over a year now, and it always gets enthusiastic compliments.  It’s a slow-burner that gets chunky and funky about ten minutes in and keeps it going.  It’s got tracks from some of my favorite artists of the genre, including Atomly, Max Mohr, and Moodymann.   Check it out below, and make sure to also visit Kino’s blog for more mixes and some great photography as well.

Vintage Columbia Sport

This was a quickie restoration I did over the weekend, of a 1960’s-era Columbia Sport bicycle.  Super relaxed frame geometry for cruising around town, and the trademark “hellenic” seat stays.  Nifty chainring cut outs and original headbadge keep this bike looking old school despite the orange and black fade paint job I gave it.  27″ wheels with a coaster brake keep the ride smooth and simple.  This bike would look great with a tweed jacket!

Infinite Grey – Live @ Fluid 2003

bassment_5.10.2008_1Infinite Grey is a one-man deep house machine. He’s been performing at raves and clubs since 2000, playing his gorgeous brand of house live from an impressive collection of hardware. Here is a great quote from his bio that sums up the Infinite Grey experience:

When you see Infinite Grey play live, you are guaranteed to see a live musical performance – not a guy huddled over a laptop. John can be seen turning on and off parts, mixing instruments, shuffling beats, manipulating effects, and playing keyboards live. He plays his tracks using pre-synced looping patterns, which are loaded and mixed together as they play.

This live set of his, from a rave in 2003, has always been a favorite of mine.  At a little under an hour, it has a sparkling “blue sky” quality to it while staying funky and totally house.  Check out his website for more free sets and tracks.
